Apparently, Finn is not the Jedi we seek (vague spoilers for TLJ).
[Guest Post] Finn as everyman? How about no?
After the release of The Last Jedi, there was a noticeable shift in how members of the general audience discussed Finn…
Now that my feels have had a chance to settle, regarding TLJ, I, too, have some quibbles, cavils, and fucking BEEF with the handling of Finn’s story arc. Not only do TLJ and the Disney Powers That Be indulge in queer-baiting (typical, unsurprising, and OF COURSE, because queers, like any other minority, will spend money in the hopes of seeing some representation . . . even just a dangled, ambiguous hint of it ::coughs:: STORMPILOT!), but they do a bait-and-switch with the promise of Finn that was trotted out as being “new” and intriguing. DIFFERENT from all the white hetero male protags in Star Wars films and film in general. And which was eventually overshadowed — by Rey’s story arc . . . that of a white (apparently?) hetero woman.
No, I’m not surprised, just disappointed. As ever. Not even in Disney or Star Wars, but in myself for even hoping for better. For fair representation and delivery on the unspoken promise of a black Jedi who wasn’t Mace-fucking-Windu.
Hollywood is a money-machine, like any other. As racist as it can get away with, as long as that equals dollar signs. It’s first concern isn’t representation, fairness, diversity, equality, and a superior story. It’s MONEY. And they’ll do the least work and invest the least effort they can to make capital on their investment.
Jedi!Finn is, I imagine, not considered much of a moneymaker by the bigwigs. Nor is Stormpilot. It’s Rey, all the way, and fucking REYLO (ugh . . . just . . . ugh). But at least Hux is still the sniveling slimebag we all knew he was from TFA. They didn’t glamorize or romanticize space!Hitler (space!Stalin?) with apologetics and woe-is-me-my-life-had-SADS. But Disney’s mistake with Finn’s promise and story arc had better not be repeated in Black Panther and whatever series emerges from that film. So far, reviews are stellar. But if T’Challa, Shuri, the Dora Milaje, Killmonger, and WAKANDA take a back-seat to fucking Bucky Barnes or Tony Stark, I’m through with the MCU. My large-share interest in Fandom — no matter the fandom — is in reading and writing. I could give or take the movies and television shows that result from whatever the fuck Disney (or Sony or whomever) does with Marvel. The same goes for video games. I’m a Bioware trashpanda, but FUCK THEM if they keep slaloming downhill at twice light-speed. Same goes for Star Wars.
Keep getting it wrong, if you dare. If you think that whitewashing the entire universe is how you make money and influence people. But those of us who are several labels deep in the “minority” category aren’t stupid. And our patience, sufferance, and good will is NOT INFINITE.
