ARE Straight Black Men the White People of Black People?
So . . . THIS happened, from a YouTuber I’d initially found refreshing, but with whom I’ve recently been growing . . . disenchanted:
“|NEWS|HOUSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY ADMITS REGISTERED CHILD SEX OFFENDER READ TO KIDS.” SEIJI HITO, Youtube. September 29, 2019. [8:15]
To the YouTuber and his angry mob-commentors, I responded thusly . . . keeping in mind that:
“The first three lines come from a reply to another commentor, but the rest is a response to this video and the comments in general:
“The bigotry and homophobia expressed here, in this video and comments-section, is frightening and gross. Pedophilia is horrifying. But how does yelling at another minority group help end that, exactly? This level of anger directed at . . . Ellen DeGeneres? Don Lemon? Whomever the angry mob, here, have decided stand for ALL THE GAYS EVER? It’s ridiculous. And kids are still being hurt while idiots yell and lay blame. What does the LGBTQIA+ community think about pedophiles? BAD! VERY BAD! Do other minority groups want each and every individual in the LGBTQIA+ community to say that? We can. WE WILL. WE HAVE BEEN. Or is it only celebrities? Should they address every case or only the ones people seem to care about? What about straight people saying pedophilia is wrong? Do they have to come out en masse on every case and say it, too? WHAT ABOUT R. KELLY FOR ALL THOSE YEARS? WHERE WERE THE FAMOUS STRAIGHT PEOPLE, SOME OF WHOM WORKED WITH HIM, LIKE ERYKAH BADU? LADY GAGA? See how that can cut both ways?
“OR . . . can we accept that, regardless of their famous folks, most groups and cultures abhor pedophilia and the minority that commit these acts against children are THROUGHOUT society, no matter the race, religion, gender, sex, orientation, political affiliation, whatever. The problem isn’t “why isn’t ***minority group*** speaking out about pedophilia. Most minority groups will GLADLY do that. The problem is what is SOCIETY going to do? ALL OF US. And when will we do it? When are we going to come together and not just PUNISH it, but study it and figure out how to prevent it from happening? Pedophiles create pedophiles. FIGURE OUT how to stop the pathology. Don’t just wait for it to happen then scream at a minority group because a member of that group did a horrible thing. Last I checked, white people have been doing that to us FOREVER. So, if you want to blame the group for the actions of a few, you’ll be yelling at a LOT of groups, minority and majority. You’ll be yelling at ALL groups, and kids will still be getting hurt by sick adults of every stripe.
“So, if you want to stop this for keeps, do what Tarana Burke suggests, and be about stopping sexual violence COMPLETELY and FOR KEEPS. Be about PROTECTING CHILDREN, not yelling at another minority group. Protect children. Do background checks and be responsible about who’s allowed around kids. Because this creep would’ve NEVER been found out if he hadn’t also performed in drag. If he’d only ever taken photos in dockers and plaid, NO ONE WOULD HAVE DONE A BACKGROUND CHECK. Because straight people are always good and never pedophiles, right? Right.
“Protect children and EVERYONE from sexual abuse and violence. No matter from whom, no matter to whom it’s happening. STOP IT. And we’re not going to get there if minority groups tear each other apart instead of reaching out and working together. If you want to just jail and punish people and let kids keep getting harmed, then stay on the blame-game and screaming at people. But the people you scream at and alienate are people who could have been allies. The PEDOPHILES don’t care about your screaming, and aren’t listening or moved to stop what they do. You are only chasing off good people who don’t want to be harassed and blamed and vilified — or even physically attacked. Especially considering that LGBTQIA+ children are at a HIGHER risk of physical and sexual abuse than children who are perceived to be “straight.” The vast majority of the LGBTQIA+ is a community that condemns the harm of children. WE were children, many of us harmed physically and sexually. Sometimes, BECAUSE we couldn’t protect ourselves by hiding who we were. Just because Ellen and whoever else haven’t addressed this case doesn’t mean that WE THE PEOPLE don’t care. WE CARE. WE WANT THIS TO NEVER HAPPEN. As a group, we’ll happily support and take part in a workable solution, should society decide on one. So, don’t scream at everyday people because some famous person didn’t puke up the buzzwords of condemnation you want to hear. Be angry, but be angry productively and justly. Don’t aim vile, bigoted rhetoric at people who’ve done nothing to earn it and who you simply refuse to admit you hate too much to EVER be satisfied with their efforts in any arena. If you’re gonna be a bigot towards a minority group, BE ABOUT IT, and cut the bullshit. But please realize: PUNCHING DOWN ON ANOTHER MINORITY GROUP IS NOT HELPING KIDS OR ANYONE ELSE, ONLY ALIENATING AND SILENCING WILLING ALLIES. How do you not see that? Why are you contributing to rhetoric that makes it MORE LIKELY that a child who is LGBTQIA+ or is thought to be, is HARMED OR KILLED by more bigots, and people who think it’s okay to harm children? Or kills themselves because adults are punching down on A CHILD for simply being who they are? Do you really not see the connection? Or do you just not care. . . ?
“I suppose it doesn’t matter. People who think like this are a hopefully dwindling minority. And while they’re occupied with being angry and bigoted, the rest of grown-ass society can maybe come together to solve this. Soon, hopefully. And I can’t, in good conscience, subscribe to or participate in this channel, anymore (not that anyone who contributes or participates even cares, but this is my line-in-the-sand). Who would stay in place knowing that almost everyone else who does hates and prejudges them, and blames them for things they not only haven’t done, but are actively fighting against in everyday life? Who would stay in a hateful crowd to be its sin-eater and scapegoat, when that time and energy is better spent effecting positive change? I’d ask if you have ANY IDEA HOW HURTFUL it is to be prejudged and hated for something you had nothing to do with or can’t control and the evil actions of a few, but . . . you DO KNOW. YOU KNOW, and still, you do this. It’s cruel and hurtful. I wish I was still angry, but halfway through this, I just got sadder.
You know better and still do this, so what hope is there for others who don’t know better? Enjoy your screaming at other minority groups. You may discover, down the road, that it’s a bridge you wish you hadn’t continually burned. Peace. Sincerely.
“‘Straight Black Men Are the White People of Black People.’ — Damon Young, TheRoot.com”
The Damon Young article, at Very Smart Brothas on TheRoot.com, is definitely worth reading several times, as is pretty much anything by Damon Young (AND Michael Harriott AND damn-near all the other writers and contributors).
So, ARE straight black men — at least some of them . . . perhaps, even dismaying number of them— the white people of Black people?
